After the Silence
C1 · Advanced · fiction · 8 scenes · Free to read
An advanced literary tale set generations after 'the Silence' — an unexplained collapse in which every machine died and the cities emptied. In a tiny settlement on the edge of the great forest and the marshes of Polesia, a young woman named Yaryna crosses the wetlands to a dead, overgrown city to recover its books for the village elder, and carries the memory of the vanished world home to the next generation. An apolitical story about nature reclaiming the earth, the fragility and endurance of human memory, and the hope carried in a sack of rescued books.
The opening scene
My name is Yaryna, and I was born after the world fell silent. That noisy, bright world the old people tell of I never saw: neither the humming machines, nor the glowing windows, nor the voices flying along wires across the whole land.
Every morning I wake to the cry of the storks. Our village stands at the edge of an ancient forest, there where the boundless marshes of Polesia begin. Mist rises slowly over the water, and in that silence you can hear the very heart of the earth beating.
