A C2 psychological thriller. Marina, a solitary literary translator wracked by insomnia, begins finding pages of a manuscript under her door each night — a story that narrates her own days and even her secret thoughts, always a step ahead. Certain she is being watched, she bolts the door and keeps vigil, only to wake with fresh ink on her fingers. When the manuscript's handwriting proves identical to her own, an elderly psychiatrist names the disorder that divides her — yet she cannot remember him at all, and the ending leaves waking life and delusion impossible to tell apart. A closed, interior tale of an unreliable narrator, the fragility of the self, memory, guilt, and doubling.
The opening scene
Уже которую ночь я не смыкаю глаз. Бессонница стала моим единственным верным спутником — она приходит бесшумно, садится в изголовье и терпеливо ждёт до рассвета. Днём я перевожу чужие романы, а ночью моя собственная жизнь кажется мне переводом с языка, которого я не понимаю.
Я живу одна, и мою тишину нарушает лишь тиканье старых часов да редкие шаги на лестнице. Я всегда гордилась своим здравым рассудком, своей привычкой держать всё под контролем. Знать бы мне тогда, как хрупка эта иллюзия порядка и как легко рассыпается она в прах.
For nights on end now I have not closed my eyes. Insomnia has become my one faithful companion — it comes soundlessly, settles at the head of the bed, and waits patiently until dawn. By day I translate other people's novels, and by night my own life seems to me a translation from a language I do not understand.
I live alone, and my silence is broken only by the ticking of an old clock and the occasional footstep on the stairs. I always took pride in my sound reason, in my habit of keeping everything under control. Had I only known then how fragile that illusion of order is, and how easily it crumbles to dust.
