The opening scene
В 1970-е годы Советский Союз уже строил станции «Салют». Космонавты жили там несколько недель или месяцев. Они работали, делали опыты и изучали Землю. Эти полёты дали инженерам важный опыт. Но станции «Салют» были небольшими. Учёные хотели создать большой дом в космосе, который можно было строить по частям.
Новый проект получил имя «Мир». В русском языке это слово имеет два значения. Оно может означать нашу планету и всех людей. Оно также означает жизнь без войны. Это имя хорошо подходило станции, где позднее работали люди из разных стран.
In the 1970s, the Soviet Union was already building the Salyut stations. Cosmonauts lived there for several weeks or months. They worked, carried out experiments, and studied Earth. These flights gave engineers important experience. But the Salyut stations were small. Scientists wanted to create a large home in space that could be built in parts.
The new project was given the name Mir. In Russian, this word has two meanings. It can mean our world and all its people. It can also mean life without war. The name suited a station where people from different countries would later work.
