The Edge of the Earth
B2 · Upper Intermediate · fiction · 8 scenes · Free to read
A B2 short story set on the wild Kamchatka peninsula. Follow Anya, a young photographer, and Pyotr, a local guide, as they fly over living volcanoes, camp in total silence, walk the steaming Valley of Geysers, meet a bear fishing for salmon, and climb a breathing volcano — a journey into fire, water, and respect for wild nature.
The opening scene
Anya had dreamed her whole life of seeing Kamchatka — a distant edge of the country in the east, where the earth breathes fire. When the plane finally began to descend, she pressed herself to the window and froze.
Below, among the clouds, huge volcanoes rose. Their white summits shone in the sun, and above one of them thin smoke slowly rose. Anya took out her camera, but realised that no single photo could convey this admiration.
