The opening scene
Beneath Thunder Mountain lay the dwarf kingdom of Stonehome. Its people never saw the sunrise through their windows, because instead of windows they had round doors leading into long halls. Huge columns supported the ceilings, and blue lamps made of mountain crystal burned on the walls. By day, hammers rang in the forges; by night, old songs filled the common halls. The dwarves said that the mountain was not only their home. It was the living memory of their people.
Young Runar worked as an assistant to the keeper of maps. He was shorter than his friends, and his red beard was only beginning to grow. Other young dwarves dreamed of becoming warriors or master smiths, but Runar loved the quiet rooms of the archive. They smelled of dust, leather, and iron ink. He could spend hours studying the lines of forgotten roads. He was especially interested in tunnels that went deeper than any known mine.
