Brother is a feature film by director Aleksei Balabanov, released in cinemas in 1997. Within a few years this modest, low-budget picture had turned into a genuine cultural phenomenon, and it remains one of the most discussed films of the post-Soviet era to this day.
To understand why Brother touched the viewer so deeply, it is not enough to see it as a simple crime thriller. This film is, above all, a portrait of an entire society — bewildered and lost in the first years after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
